Forays into the wild are educational for young bears, but not without danger. If a strange bear appears, things can get tight for them. Male bears kill strange cubs so that they can mate with their mother sooner.
Young brown bears stay with their mother for about two years before they set off into the wide world on their own.
The mothers have to aggressively defend their cubs, especially against other bears. In western and central Europe there are only a few isolated brown bear populations left.
Further east and north in Europe, things are even better in some regions. Filmmakers Oliver Goetzl and Ivo Nörenberg were able to film this bear family in Finland.
